The Web Listings, Inc. scam is old, but it must work because it has been going on forever. Here is how it works:
Web Listings, Inc. sends out an official looking invoice/letter for either registering your domain at 600% markup, or for a dubious “Annual Website Listing.” It targets novices and small businesses who aren’t the most technically savvy, and Web Listings, Inc. is hoping these people just pay the bill without thinking about it.
In the past, we have had clients who received this letter and freaked out so we wanted to put together a reminder to avoid this shady company.
This past week, we received an envelope from Web Listings, Inc. at our Alameda web design office. We had a good laugh about it, then ripped it up. You should, too.
